OULDERHILL JUDO CLUB GIVE IT THEIR ALL!
Oulderhill Judo Club, run by Paralympic Judo gold medallist, Simon Jackson MBE returned to the North West Junior Mini age banded championships in St. Helens, the club’s second appearance at this competition.
Three club members represented Oulderhill Judo Club this time, Jodie Cullen, Andrew Tighe and Daniel Kelly. The day started with Jodie performing for the first time in the under 9 year olds category.
Jodie was surprisingly calm and cool before she was called to step on the mat. She was up against girls much bigger than her with slightly more experience but despite this, Jodie walked on with confidence and managed to win the bronze medal.
Second player to step onto the Judo mat was Andrew Tighe also performing for the first time. Andrew went on the mat determined and showed no mercy in his first fight, getting out of a hold down with ease and standing up, throwing his opponent for a 7 point score, winning the first match. His next opponent was slightly more experienced and Andrew met his match, only losing by a minor score. Andrew went on to take the bronze medal.
"It takes guts to get on that mat and fight..."
Daniel Kelly was in a tough section, he was placed in the category above his age group but as this was Danny’s second competition, Simon wasn’t worried and had extreme confidence as he was defending champion in his category.
Danny stepped onto the mat facing his first opponent who was much bigger than him but Danny’s technique out classed his opponent and he won his first match in just over 30 seconds. Danny won the semi final with ease and was ready for the final. Danny started the final strong by throwing his opponent for a seven point score, adding another 5 points by another class throw. But unfortunately his opponent throw him on the bell for a 10 point score wiping out Danny’s scores! Daniel brought home the silver medal and was disappointed not to have retained his title but there is always next year!
Simon is extremely proud of all three players, ‘It takes guts to get on that mat and fight - well done!'
The players are now back training at Oulderhill Community High School in Rochdale every Tuesday evening between 6.30-7.30pm to work on their moves! Also now running at the club is a senior class, all ages welcome from 16 years…come and have a go!
